Purpose:

What each of us does comes from some crazy need to do more than just live, no, more than just exist. Look at a dancer that breathes his craft or an actor that is always on stage. This is drinking every drop that life has to offer without regret or shame. This is explained most often as what we do but in reality it is simply who we are. We are each defined by our actions and those actions are as natural to us as breathing or waking up in the morning. This is living with purpose.”

So that is the pat and expected bio, but my friends have told me that I should post the real attributes of Coach Adam, so here they are:

  • Believes that shiny new objects don’t outweigh the essence of experience – Owns a ’91 Ford Explorer, ’82 Trek 1400 and still wears running shorts from his first marathon
  • Is quite happy to live out of the back of his truck and finds sleeping in The Basher more comfortable than most hotel rooms
  • Hates, lothes, abhores, deplores, despises, detests the heat! Happiest racing in a singlet and running shorts in 48F degrees
  • Enjoys the sensation of ice cubes bouncing in my shorts on a hot run
  • Am fond of sleeping the night before a race in the transition area under the stars and waking up by jumping into the lake in which I will swim a few hours later
  • Would love to work wirelessly hanging from a rock in Sequoia
  • Am a strong believer in respecting the quality of craftsmanship and defines useful life as the actual useful life based on its purpose; fashion or style is hardly a consideration
  • Carries a trowel with him because when you gotta go, you gotta go and it’s always a good idea to leave no trace
  • Believes in integrity, true friendship and loyalty above all else
  • Loves that as a coach at a race, what is an ordinary day for me is an extraordinary day for my athletes
  • Believes that coaching is about one single thing, creating exceptional experiences for others
  • Views competition with others as silly, competition to be the best you can be, however is an admirable trait. There are far too many unmet needs to have to piss in someone else’s pond. Show true genius by creating something that many need without causing detriment to another – or just be a copycat punk
  • Eats sesame tofu from Whole Foods at least three times a week
  • Isn’t concerned at all when I come to your house and there is nothing I can eat, because I’ve probably brought my own food with me
  • Die-hard USC Trojan fan
  • Has run a bunch of races over the years. has won some and lost all of the others
  • Loves the feeling of Lake Placid during Ironman week and Boston leading up to Patriot’s Day
  • Really doesn’t like the NYC Marathon all that much, preferring a smaller, quieter, and more natural marathon experience
  • My worst day in the Santa Monica Mountains or in Rockefeller Park is better than my best day in an office
  • Fiercely defends animal rights and living creatures that cannot defend themselves.
  • Believes in principles and the application of common sense over policy without purpose and hypocritically is intolerant of intolerance
  • Can be found on highways and streets with Cindy rescuing animals in the middle of the night, sleeping under the stars, or running along the beach into the sunset
